Double-Edged Oath

I had an interesting random thought the other day — I doubt it will go anywhere politically but I think it’s a valid point — that I’d be interested in hearing your thoughts on the matter.
So, hear me out.
Every Congressman and Senator takes an oath when they are sworn into office to protect the Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic. Are these Senators and Congressmen who are supporting Donald Trump for President violating their oath of office?
Like I said, I doubt this has any legs politically, but I think they are if not outright violating their oath they are disregarding it. The twice impeached President has multiple indictments against him regarding his alleged involvement in the January 6th insurrection. While railing against what he falsely claimed was voter fraud he tweeted “A Massive Fraud of this type and magnitude allows for the termination of all rules, regulations, and articles even those found in the Constitution.” Yes, he actually said he would terminate the Constitution if it benefited him.
And while he hasn’t yet gone to trial for any of the charges against him involving January 6th, his words and the evidence released by the January 6th Committee clearly point to an attempt to attack the Constitution that every Congressperson and Senator took an oath to defend.
Now I’ll ask it again: Are these Senators and Congressmen violating the oath they took when they were sworn into office?
Before some of you dismiss what I’m saying by trying to label me as some kind of liberal or Biden lover, I can assure you that’s not the case. I will remind you that the people that have testified under oath about the actions and words of the former President are not Democrats but staunch conservative Republicans who worked closely with the former President. People like Liz Cheney, Adam Kinsinger, Chris Christie, and numerous west wing staffers are all sounding the alarm about the dangers of a second Trump term in office.
I would not be writing an article like this if Nikki Haley, Chris Christie, or almost any other Republican was the front runner for the nomination. I wouldn’t even have thought of the possibility of these elected officials betraying their oath of office by supporting almost any other candidate.
After the New Hampshire primary, Senator Deb Fisher threw her support to Donald Trump; Congressman Don Bacon said he would support whoever the Republican nominee was. But our Congressman has embraced the endorsement he got from House speaker Mike Johnson. Johnson is an election denier who is supporting the former Commander in Chief. Since it looks like Trump will be the nominee, it looks like Congressman Bacon will be endorsing him. Pete Ricketts so far remains non-committal in any endorsement. But I seriously doubt that if Donald Trump is the Republican nominee that Senator Ricketts would endorse Joe Biden.
Like I said, I’d be interested in your thoughts about this. Are these elected Senators and Congressmen violating or ignoring their oath? Should this be an issue or is this no big deal? You can email me your thoughts at tom@omahadailyrecord.com.
I know that politics being what they are that nothing will likely come of this on Capitol Hill. But could it be a factor in the upcoming election? That is an interesting, random thought.
